Meaningful Mementoes

Choosing what kind of objects we display at home varies from person to person. For me, it's easy... I want to surround myself with items that have a special meaning for me or my loved ones. Seeing a vase that belonged to my childhood home, now on the kitchen table, gives me feeling of comfort and continuity.

MIXING OLD AND NEWHOME

February 2025:

The challenge comes with mixing old and new. Items that are meaningful for us are not necessarily "high design" or something that style-wise would fit in our homes. Finding an aesthetically pleasing balance can be difficult, yet rewarding, when we get it "just right".

With my father passing recently, I have been forced to look at my parents' furniture, textiles, photos, decorations, even kitchenware, with fresh eyes. With eyes of perspective, love, and cherished memories. As much as I like all design, I noticed choosing items to myself that had connection into something positive and memorable in the past.

Our homes can't be museums where decorations from past generations are put on a shrine. The best items are those that we actually use and when we look at them, we remember someone we dearly loved. If they don't mix 100% with everything else, they only add some character.

When you display items that have something in common, like the gold color in modern lanterns and in German Arzberg vintage vase in the picture, you are doing pretty good. That vase belonged to my parents and I'm so happy that I got it to Canada in one piece.

Enjoy, and use, your treasures!
