Mixing Old And New

Do you have heirlooms at your home? I'm a big fan of them. It gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling when I see a tablecloth from my late favorite Aunt. Then again, my heart leaps with joy seeing a brand new vase on the kitchen island.

MIXING OLD AND NEWVARIETY

January 2024:

I believe in love. The objects we love always fit somewhere at home. Truth is, many pieces of wooden furniture, made some 80 years ago, are still standing! How many of the much younger MDF armoires still exist in 2104? Something to ponder. I love the old wooden writing desk that is pictured here; it belonged to my late Mother-in-Law, Irene.

One of the Principals of Design is "variety". Variety means "the quality or state of being different or diverse; the absence of uniformity, sameness, or monotony." Also, "a number or range of things of the same general class that are different of distinct in character or quality." Quotes are from the Oxford Languages.

Variety adds visual interest and "positive friction" into a space. Your unique pieces of art and furniture make your home fascinating. You probably have items that share the "same general class"; say, books. Think about a home library with bookcases filled with series of old volumes and a few shelves with modern, gleaming coffee table books in between. What a delicious visual impact!

The same can be applied to wooden objects and furniture. A certain theme is also a great way to combine new and old.

Keep believing in love and mix your treasures boldly!
