Nordic Christmas

North American Christmas décor has a lot of twinkle and shine - and unfortunately of lot of plastics - whereas Scandinavian, Nordic Christmas décor consists mainly of natural materials, candles, primary color of red, and a "real" Christmas tree. Style is understated, yet colorful and festive; distinctive for this special season. Many have found this style lately, perhaps because the whole home building industry is gravitating towards simpler presentation.

SCANDINAVIANHOMECHRISTMAS

December 2024

For many years I forgot about my Nordic roots at Christmas. Today I'm grateful for not throwing away my Finnish and Swedish decorations. My husband and I have always had a real tree; it is one of those "must" traditions that make this month of December so special. In my childhood, my father cut the tree down himself; it was truly a "family operation".

Nordic Christmas doesn't have a showy appearance; the focus is on slowing down, meditating the meaning of Christmas, resting, enjoying family, and meeting friends, especially on Boxing Day. In Scandinavian tradition, Christmas Eve is the most expected moment; sauna for Finns, festive dinner, Father Christmas' (Santa's) visit, presents... it all happens on Christmas Eve! We may also take candles to the graveyard to commemorate the deceased family members.

I have decided to simplify our Christmas this year... Limited amount of gifts. As for décor, we will only have the tree, some Nordic decorations, plus a few poinsettias and natural green wreaths. Candles. I feel like "less is more" this year. Maybe next year is different.

Christmas season lifts up people's spirits and our homes reflect the same. I hope, though, that everyone will remain merciful to themselves... Cleaning, cooking, decorating, entertaining; it all has its place but please remember take a breather as well.

Wishing you a wonderful Christmas with the ones you love!
