Splashes of Color

Scandinavian color palette is traditionally described as muted and earthy. It's true; grey, white, beige, and black are commonplace in décor, but accents can be surprisingly colorful.

Maybe long and dark winters create this need of color in the Nordic countries. Luckily, when landscape is covered with snow, it creates a beautiful aura of light, even when daylight is insufficient.

Color is powerful; it can lift up one's mood or downgrade it. Splashes of bright color enhance Scandinavian style, as the décor may seem monotonous without any primary, secondary or tertiary colors.

Maija Isola, creator of floral print Unikko (1964) was a textile designer who knew how to use colors. Her colorful textile designs can be widely seen, not only in Scandinavian homes, but worldwide.

Understandably, for many people the most intimidating part of a renovation project is choosing the color palette. Paint color on the wall can look very different than a small paint chip at a paint store.

Sometimes one's favorite color clashes with the taste of the other homeowner... Solutions - even compromises - can be found and it gets fun to experiment with colors that are not in one's comfort zone.

Hue, tint, shade, tone; they are all part of a renovation project, but spaces get boring without some splashes of color!
